This picture is of my great grandfather Orlie Charles McKenzie, with an unknown friend, very proudly displaying a bear that one of them had shot. The photo was most likely taken in Montmorency County, Michigan, and was given to me by my grandmother Edna Jean (Burt) McKenzie.

Wedding photo of my 3rd Great Grandparents Richard Watchorn and Elizabeth (Howley) Watchorn.

Wedding photo of Richard Watchorn and Elizabeth (Howley) Watchorn.

Richard and Elizabeth were both born in Ireland in the 1820s and immigrated to Canada in the 1840s, where they raised their nine children.
I haven't had the opportunity to do a lot of research on this family, but it is one of my favorite photos. Specifically, I like Richard's warm eyes,  crooked smile and the flowers in his lapel.

I received several photos of the Hawley family from my grandmother Edna Jean (Burt) McKenzie.

The photo below is one of these photos. The only description I have is "Unknown Hawley Man by Cabin"

Unknown Hawley Man by Cabin
Unknown Hawley Man by Cabin - Close up

There are a couple of things that I find interesting about this photo:

  • the man is wearing both a tie and overalls.
  • the items in the door of the cabin, there is a chair with something on it and a broom leaning in the doorway.
    • It almost seems to me that maybe this gentleman has either just built the cabin or just moved into his new home. Either way, he looks very mighty proud!

My assumption, based on the fact that I received this photo from my grandmother, Edna Jean Burt, and what I know of our Hawley family, I would assume that this picture was taken in either Long Rapids Township, Alpena County, Michigan or Rust, Montmorency County, Michigan.

At this point in time, I don't know who this ancestor is, but someday, I will figure it out!
If you know who this man might be and would like to share that information please use the Contact Me page or the Share Your Story page.
