- [S120] Private - Privately Held Family Artifacts - Hawley Family, William Hawley Obituary (Reliability: 2).
William Hawley was born in Steuben county, New York, August 31, 1836; died at his hone in Bellflower August 28, 1914, after a lingering and painful illness. He had been failing health for several years.
Mr. Hawley was a gentle, kindly man, beloved by all who knew him. Enduring all the weary days of pain, covering a period of four months, was never known to murmur. His was indeed "the faith that lifts, the courage that sustains," and he waited patiently, trustingly for release from his sufferings. For him there is a day of sunny rest. For every dark and troubled night;and grief may bide an evening guest and joy shall come with morning light.
"For God hath marked each sorrowing day. and numbered every secret tear, and heaven's long age of bliss shall pay for all his children suffer here."
The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the faithful wife who ministered with such untiring devotion through his illness. Besides the widow, he leaves two sons living in California, also a daughter in Michigan. Mrs. H. Urguhart.
God took dear father home to rest, leaving us here alone in our home, the very air seems fully of gloom, though warmth and fragrance fill the room.
God in his wisdom hath recalled the one we loved so well; A place is vacant in our home which never can be filled.
Would God but roll away the stones and give us inner sense to see-- Though out of mortal sight is he, His spirit yet is near to me.
Dear Savior, who in death hath slept, and at the tomb of Lazarus wept, pity our saddened hearts that been and give us strength which now we need. Mrs. W.H.

Mortuary
William Hawley, 78 years of age, a resident of Bellflower for the past three years, died on Friday morning at his home, Somerset Avenue and Ramona, of bronchitis. He had been ailing for several months with a severe cough, and this finally terminated fatally.
He leave a wife, two sons and a daughter, only one of the children Charles Hawley, being a resident of this state, living at Buena Park; the other two reside in the east.
Mr. Hawley was a good, industrious, Christian man, and his demise is greatly regretted by a large circle of friends here and elsewhere.
The funeral services were held on Sunday Afternoon, conducted by Rev. John Gabrielson. Burial was in the Artesia cemetery.
- [S137] Book - Village of Hillman 1891 - 1991, Pioneers Section: 11. (Reliability: 2).
Wm. Hawley, a farmer, removed from Stuben county, York State. Upon his arrival his only available surplus consisted of a liveral supply of endurance, pluck and muscle. Minue ox or horse, he backed his supplies from Alpena. His only companions enroute were wolves and he modestly admits their nearness and howls often caused a sudden rising of his hat. With grateful hearts many a pioneer settler remembers Mr. and Mrs. Hawley for kind assistance rendered in time of need. None ever asked shelter or food and asked in vain. Their latch string always hangs outside.
