According to St. Clair County Sheriff's deputies, the vehicle driven by the victim, Helen Hawley, was seen crossing over the fog line onto the shoulder three times before making a U-turn directly into the path of a dump truck hauling a trailer. The car struck the driver's side door causing the dump truck to spin and jackknife the trailer. The driver of the truck, 58-year old Raymond Anglin of Marine City was treated at the scene. Hawley was transported to Mt. Clemens General Hospital where she passed away from her injuries Thursday morning. | LaFleure, Helen Ilene (I7481)

13 | Crash kills Capac woman By JESSE DUNSMORE Times Herald • May 29, 2009 A 77-year-old Capac woman died Thursday morning from injuries sustained in a crash Wednesday in Casco Township, said Deputy Steve Campau, St. Clair County Sheriff Department spokesman, in a news release. Helen Irene Hawley was heading westbound on Marine City Highway about 3 p.m. when she made a U-turn into the path of a dump truck hauling a trailer. The truck struck her vehicle's driver-side door, then spun out and jackknifed the trailer. Witnesses reported seeing Hawley's vehicle cross the fog line and go onto the shoulder of the road at least three times, the third time just before making the U-turn. Skid marks on the road indicated truck driver Raymond Earl Anglin, 58, of Marine City had locked his brakes trying to stop his truck before the impact, according to the release. Anglin was treated at the scene and released. Ira Township EMS transported Hawley to Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center, where she died Thursday morning. Ira Township Rescue also responded to the scene of the crash. Sheriff Tim Donnellon said the accident is under investigation. Nobody answered a phone call Thursday night to a Capac phone number in Hawley's name. | LaFleure, Helen Ilene (I7481)

19 | Isabelle (or Élisabeth) TARGÉ (Target or Targer)... was from a Huguenot family in LaRochelle when she decided in 1659 to emigrate to Canada. She was about 22 years old. Her father, Daniel Targé was a marinier (mariner or bargeman) whose many children with his wife, Louise Martin, were baptized at the temple in Villeneuve. Among them, a younger sister, Marie Targé who arrived in Canada in 1663 as a fille-du-roi. Isabelle Targé was the widow of Simon Piat. She appeared to not have any children at the time she made the trip to Canada. Sometime along the way she renounced Calvinism for Catholism and in August of 1659 she married Mathurin Gerbert in a Catholic ceremony in Québec. He was from the parish of St. Sulpice-des-Langes in Brittany. First mention of him in Canada was 7-12-1659 in Québec at the lease of a farm. On the census of 1666, the Gerbert family is listed as living in the Québec area where Mathurin Gerbert is a settler. Together, they had 7 children, three of which (all boys) had died quite young. There appears to have been an epidemic that took two sons, aged 5 and 3 in February and May of 1672. Isabelle herself had died sometime in 1670, leaving 6 children, aged 10 to infant. Her husband, Mathurin Gerbert remarried in January 1671. http://www.apointinhistory.net/larochelle.php | Targer, Isabelle Elizabeth (I8151)

26 | A final comment: The many Filles du Roi who married in New France, as well as the former political prisoners taken in the colonies of the future United States, had to be Catholic in order tobe married in the Church and to remain as inhabitants. I am aware of baptisms of former prisoners who renounced the protestant faith but not of Filles du Roi, because these women were sent specifically to become brides. Therefore, they had to be Catholic to participate in the program sponsored by the king. It has been shown that a great deal of care was given in selecting these women.9 Yves Landry indicates that only twelve Filles du Roi were known to have been protestant. 10 That’s about two percent of the total number —770— he identified. Only two of these twelve abjured their protestant faith in the New World: Catherine Basset, 16 Oct 1667,married 17 October 1667; and Marthe Quitel, abjured 17 July 1665, married 22 September 1665.The other ten are recorded as having been baptized protestant, most of these baptized at the protestant temple in La Rochelle: Marguerite Ardion; Catherine Barré; Madeleine Delaunay; Elisabeth Doucinet; Anne Javelot; Marie Léonard; Anne Lépine; Barb Ménard; Marie Targer; Marie Valade. Where these ten women accepted Catholicism is unknown, but it may have happened in France. http://habitantheritage.org/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/Adult_Confirmations_and_Conversions_2014_-_Suzanne.84181244.pdf | Targer, Marie (I873)

42 | Aunt Susie Obituary: Our dear Aunt, Cousin and friend Susan M. Brock passed away peacefully June 20, 2016 at War Memorial Hospital's Long Term Unit in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Susan was born in October of 1934 on Sugar Island, Michigan to Frank Brock and Annie (Watchorn) Brock. Susan worked very hard her entire life, starting as a child on the family farm on Sugar Island. She later worked as a motel/Hotel maid at many area businesses until her retirement. Susie (as we lovingly called her) took great pride in her work and made sure each room was meticulously clean and welcoming, which was the same way she kept her home. Since her retirement, her health quickly deteriorated due to osteoporosis. She was an amazing and very independent woman, who never wanted to ask anyone for help with anything. She always took great pride and care with her appearance also. From the very early morning, Susie always looked beautiful from her hair to her shoes. Susie was the last remaining child of Frank and Annie Brock's 5 children. Robert and Donald Brock, Grace Royer/Stonerock and June Bateson/Norman all preceded her in death. Susie had a very close "Motherly" relationship with all of her nieces of nephews. Gloria, Donna, Vera, Linda, Albert, the late Joseph, Tommy and Robbie. And an especially close bond with her Great great niece Kylimry. Susie's parents, herself and 4 siblings all had a very strong and personal relationship with our Heavenly Father Jesus Christ and worshiped and praised him, not only on Sunday but everyday of their lives. They are now all joined together once again in their heavenly home. Susie will be greatly missed for her loving, nurturing nature and sense of humor. There will be a graveside service for Susan M. Brock Saturday, August 6th at 11am at Pine Grove Cemetery on M-28 and 6 mile road in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan with Susan's loving niece, Linda Royer/Szymanski officiating. Susan will be laid to rest next to her Mother, Annie Brock-Pattison and step-father Henry Pattison. A dutch treat lunch will follow the service at Stusebaker's restaurant in Sault Ste. Marie. Memorials may be left to the Salvation Army of Soo, Michigan, The Soo Community Action Agency or Hospice of Chippewa County in her name | Brock, Susan M. (I695)

110 | I believe William Hawley to be the father of Ellen Hawley. However, based on her baptism record (11/24/1871), her conception date would have been on or before 2/24/1871. Since William's first wife Mercy died on 7/30/1871 and William and Sarah (Ellen's Mother) were not married until 5/15/1872, this could be called into question. | Hawley, Ellen (I47)

111 | I have a number of original letters and research notes compiled be Marilyn Hawley Symonds in the 1950's and early 1960's when she wrote "Smith Hawley and his Descendants" which she published in 1961. I am in the process of transcribing and/or scanning them so as other Hawley descendants have access to them. The project, which has turned out to be more labour intensive than I thought, is on hold as we sold our home in Vancouver BC a few months ago and are in the process of moving to our new home where I plan to build an office dedicated to this project. - Brian Hayes | Source (S185)

117 | I have not yet found proof of William and Mercy's marriage location. My assumption is based on the fact that I believe Mercy was living in Howard, Steuben County, in 1850 (this hasn't been proven as of yet) and William Was living in Urbana, Steuben County, 1850 an 1855, that they were married somewhere in Steuben County. Estimated date based on date of 1855 census and birth of birth child (minus 9 months) I wonder if William and Sarah (his second wife) were having an affair, resulting in the birth of their daughter Ellen Hawley (Between 1869 - 1871). What makes me question this more is the fact that Mercy (his first wife) bought property in her own name right next to William in January of 1869. In July 1871, Mercy died of an accidental gunshot wound. The property she had purchased wasn't left to William but was instead left to her daughter Minnie Belle. | Family F13

174 | Options for husband of Ellen Hawley Option 1: Paul Dane (2/27/1837 - 6/23/1918) Conclusion: Not the husband of Ellen Hawley Reasons for conclusion: 1. Age difference of about 34 years - Possible, but not probable 2. He was already married to Janet Campbell during the time period that Ellen Hawley would have been married 3. He never lived in Hillman, Michigan, based on what I could find. Option 2: John Dane (10/2/1850 - 12/23/1932) Conclusion: Not the husband of Ellen Hawley Reasons for conclusion: 1. Marriage to Bertha O'Leary in 1889 in Bay City, Michigan 2. Age difference of about 20 years - possible, but not as probable 3. He never lived in Hillman, Michigan 4. If he did marry Ellen, it would have had to have been between 1886 and 1888 - She was still listed as married in 1891, he was married to Bertha 5. Marriage to Bertha - Marriage record states he had not been married before 6 - Marriage to Carrie - 1906 - Marriage record states he had been married only one time before, which would have been Bertha Option 3: John Dane Jr. (1871 - ?) Conclusion: Possible, and at this time, the best option. More questions to be answered Reasons for conclusion: 1. Closer in age 0 only 0 - 1 year apart 2. lived with cousin John Dane - Who lived in Alpena, Michigan multiple times | Dane (I8250)

212 | Plea for a Pardon Numerously signed petition presented to the Governor. Urging the release from Prison of a boy serving an eight years’ sentence from Baker County Gov. T.T. Geer yesterday received a petition for the granting of a pardon for William Marshall, a prisoner at the penitentiary, aged 19 years, who is serving an 8 years’ sentence for manslaughter from Baker County. The case is a peculiar one, and many of the leading citizens of Baker County signed the request for executive clemency, among the signers being merchants, physicians, attorneys, newspapermen, miners, ranchers, stockmen, the sheriff, two deputies, sheriff, constables, many G. A.R. men, four of the trial jurors, a member of the legislature and others. The petition has not been taken up for action as yet, and before this is done, the governor will communicate with the district attorney and the trial judge, relative to the matter, and as certain from those officials their view of the case, and the justice of the claims made. The petition contains a very fair statement of facts, regarding the crime, of which the young man stands convicted, and should the statement prove true, in every particular, it is possible that it will receive favorable consideration at the hands of the executive. It is given in full below, show the circumstances of the killing. “On the twenty-first day of April, 1898,two brothers, Oliver Marshall, aged 17 years, came to Baker City each on a load of wood. After disposing of their wood they started home each on his own wagon, their home being situated, about 11 miles from Baker City. When within about one mile of their home their further progress was stopped by two teams of wood haulers standing side by side in the road. One of which wagons was that of one James Reed who was standing in the road beside his wagon and engaged in conversation with some person sitting on the other wagon. The two Marshall boys waited in the road for the said Reed and the other man to drive on so that they, the Marshall boys, could proceed. The Marshall boys got off their wagon sand walked up behind the two wagons that obstructed the road, The time of day was after sundown and about dark. Oliver Marshall, the eldest of the two brothers, was listening to some remarks Reed was making, spoke up to the said James Reed and said to him, “What was that you said about my wife?” Some angry words passed between the two men when James Reed rushed up to Oliver Marshall seized him and crushed him to the ground, exclaiming. “I’ll kill you, you -----.”William Marshall the boy then but 17 years old, learning that his brother’s life was in danger, called out to Reed to desist, and picked up a stick lying in the road near by, and Reed, who had a rock in his hand and was holding Oliver Marshall on the ground, partially raised up and hurled the rock at William Marshall as he was approaching. William Marshall then struck Reed over the head with the stick. The blow release, Oliver Marshall who Reed held by the throat at the time the blow was struck. Reed was assisted onto his wagon and he then drove home from the scene of the affray. Reed died about three days later from contusion of the brain. Oliver Marshall had formerly been an inmate of the asylum of the state of Oregon, and had never fully recovered from his dementia. He was a weekly person, in ill health only weighing 115 pounds, and was a giant in strength. William Marshall, above named, was but 17 years of age, small in stature and weighed about 125 pounds at the time of time. He interfere din the affray between Reed and his brother under the well grounded belief that his brother’s life was in danger at the hands of Reed. The defendant, William Marshall sought to introduce these facts upon trial, but was prevented from interposing such defense by the subdivision one (1) of section 1730, page 695 of Hill’s Code of Oregon, which does not included the right of a brother to protect the life of a brother when in danger, and which abridged the common law to that extent. The trial resulted in the conviction of both the Marshall boys for manslaughter, being had on the 10th of July , 1898.Oliver Marshall being sentenced to 10 years, and William Marshall for a period of 8 years. Oliver Marshall, after serving a portion of the term in the penitentiary, was again adjudge insane and transferred to the Oregon insane asylum, where he now remains. William Marshall is still in the Oregon penitentiary. “Your petitioners therefore respectfully submit that under these fact, particularly considering the physical and mental condition of the older brother, and the extreme youth of the boy William Marshall, and that the fact that he interfered i n the affray for the purpose of protecting a weak demented brother, from what appeared to him a dangerous adversary, therefore the result of this transaction so far as the boy William Marshall is concerned is rather that of a misfortune. Therefore we respectfully ask that you interpose executive clemency and grant a pardon for the said William Marshall. | Marshall, Oliver (I7624)

1068 | Sometime, in your spare time Becky dear, maybe you could do some research on Henry Pattison. The long forgotten (pretty much) soul that is also buried at the site where we all gathered today, with no marker. He was the only man that made our precious Gramma Annie truly happy. Husband and wife lay side by side there, and now Aunt Susie is there too. It got me to thinking about what a mystery this man is to our family. All I remember, from what my mother told me, is that he was a very handsome man who fell in love with and married her mother. Henry was buried at that spot first and your great-grandmother Annie after, right next to him. All we know about this man is that he was not from the Soo. He came into this town as a bible salesman and met gramma by stopping by her home. The visits turned from salesman to a romantic nature, and before long they were married. He, gramma, Aunt Susie and Uncle Bobby all lived in that tiny little house. Henry held revival services there at the Sheridan Drive home. This strange man then became a part of our family. He entered Gramma's life in his 60's and we know nothing about his past. - Robbie Kilda 8/6/2016 | Pattison, Rev. James Henry (I8364)

1070 | The filles du roi, or King's Daughters, were some 770 women who arrived in the colony of New France (Canada) between 1663 and 1673, under the financial sponsorship of King Louis XIV of France. Most were single French women and many were orphans. Their transportation to Canada and settlement in the colony were paid for by the King. Some were given a royal gift of a dowry of 50 livres for their marriage to one of the many unmarried male colonists in Canada. These gifts are reflected in some of the marriage contracts entered into by the filles du roi at the time of their first marriages. The filles du roi were part of King Louis XIV's program to promote the settlement of his colony in Canada. Some 737 of these women married and the resultant population explosion gave rise to the success of the colony. Most of the millions of people of French Canadian descent today, both in Quebec and the rest of Canada and the USA (and beyond!), are descendants of one or more of these courageous women of the 17th century. | Targer, Marie (I873)

1073 | The legal age of consent to get married in the state of Washington was 17 with parental consent and 18 without parental consent. Although both Olive and Alice were living in Pullman, Whitman County, Washington, Alice was not yet 16 and therefore unable to get married in Washington. They drove about 20 miles away across the Idaho state line, where she was able to get married, with parental consent at the age of 16. | Family F2447

1074 | There is a small cabin out front on a hill at the Steiner Museum just north of Fairview, Mi. On M-33 N. that use to be down in the valley just before the area it sits today, its all small pine trees now in the valley. Anyway my grandfather Percy Hawley ( son of Frank & Pauline Hawley) told my dad ( Alton Hawley) that his Aunt Lavina & Uncle Burt were married in that cabin. Kind cool family history. | Family F10

1086 | This assumption is made based on the fact that her daughter Alice May Biddlecomb was married in Latah, Idaho on 8/31/1895. Alice was not of legal age to get married without parental consent. 1109 | William Hawley was born in Steuben county, New York, August 31, 1836; died at his home in Bellflower August 28, 1914, after a lingering and painful illness. He had been failing health for several years. Mr. Hawley was a gentle, kindly man, beloved by all who knew him. Enduring all the weary days of pain, covering a period of four months, was never known to murmur. His was indeed "the faith that lifts, the courage that sustains," and he waited patiently, trustingly for release from his sufferings. For him there is a day of sunny rest. For every dark and troubled night;and grief may bide an evening guest and joy shall come with morning light. "For God hath marked each sorrowing day. and numbered every secret tear, and heaven's long age of bliss shall pay for all his children suffer here." The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the faithful wife who ministered with such untiring devotion through his illness. Besides the widow, he leaves two sons living in California, also a daughter in Michigan. Mrs. H. Urguhart. God took dear father home to rest, leaving us here alone in our home, the very air seems fully of gloom, though warmth and fragrance fill the room. God in his wisdom hath recalled the one we loved so well; A place is vacant in our home which never can be filled. Would God but roll away the stones and give us inner sense to see-- Though out of mortal sight is he, His spirit yet is near to me. Dear Savior, who in death hath slept, and at the tomb of Lazarus wept, pity our saddened hearts that been and give us strength which now we need. Mrs. W.H.; Mortuary William Hawley, 78 years of age, a resident of Bellflower for the past three years, died on Friday morning at his home, Somerset Avenue and Ramona, of bronchitis. He had been ailing for several months with a severe cough, and this finally terminated fatally. He leave a wife, two sons and a daughter, only one of the children Charles Hawley, being a resident of this state, living at Buena Park; the other two reside in the east. Mr. Hawley was a good, industrious, Christian man, and his demise is greatly regretted by a large circle of friends here and elsewhere. The funeral services were held on Sunday Afternoon, conducted by Rev. John Gabrielson. Burial was in the Artesia cemetery.; | Healy, Sarah Ann (I35)
