    • This assumption is made based on the fact that her daughter Alice May Biddlecomb was married in Latah, Idaho on 8/31/1895. Alice was not of legal age to get married without parental consent. This makes me think that Minnie was also living in Pullman, Whitman, Washington, where both Oliver and Alice were living at the time of their marriage.

    • I have not yet found proof of William and Mercy's marriage location. My assumption is based on the fact that I believe Mercy was living in Howard, Steuben County, in 1850 (this hasn't been proven as of yet) and William Was living in Urbana, Steuben County, 1850 an 1855, that they were married somewhere in Steuben County.

Estimated date based on date of 1855 census and birth of birth child (minus 9 months)

I wonder if William and Sarah (his second wife) were having an affair, resulting in the birth of their daughter Ellen Hawley (Between 1869 - 1871). What makes me question this more is the fact that Mercy (his first wife) bought property in her own name right next to William in January of 1869. In July 1871, Mercy died of an accidental gunshot wound. The property she had purchased wasn't left to William but was instead left to her daughter Minnie Belle.

    16. [S120] Private - Privately Held Family Artifacts - Hawley Family, William Hawley Obituary.
William Hawley was born in Steuben county, New York, August 31, 1836; died at his hone in Bellflower August 28, 1914, after a lingering and painful illness. He had been failing health for several years.
Mr. Hawley was a gentle, kindly man, beloved by all who knew him. Enduring all the weary days of pain, covering a period of four months, was never known to murmur. His was indeed "the faith that lifts, the courage that sustains," and he waited patiently, trustingly for release from his sufferings. For him there is a day of sunny rest. For every dark and troubled night;and grief may bide an evening guest and joy shall come with morning light.
"For God hath marked each sorrowing day. and numbered every secret tear, and heaven's long age of bliss shall pay for all his children suffer here."
The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the faithful wife who ministered with such untiring devotion through his illness. Besides the widow, he leaves two sons living in California, also a daughter in Michigan. Mrs. H. Urguhart.
God took dear father home to rest, leaving us here alone in our home, the very air seems fully of gloom, though warmth and fragrance fill the room.
God in his wisdom hath recalled the one we loved so well; A place is vacant in our home which never can be filled.
Would God but roll away the stones and give us inner sense to see-- Though out of mortal sight is he, His spirit yet is near to me.
Dear Savior, who in death hath slept, and at the tomb of Lazarus wept, pity our saddened hearts that been and give us strength which now we need. Mrs. W.H.

Mrs. Hawley, whom we spoke of last week as having accidently shot herself, died on Sunday morning. She was supposed to be getting along very well up to a few hours before her death. She morning been quite deranged for two days and nights, - at times almost unmanageable, - requiring the constant care of her husband and nurse; but on Saturday evening she fell into a deep slumber from which she never aroused. The nurse, worn out with constant watching, had laid down, leaving the husband to watch the sufferer. Soon after Mr. Hawley call her, saying that he could not hear his wife breathe, and upon examination she was found dead. She had quietly passed away. The deceased was about thirty-five years of age. She was the first white woman to settle west of the North Branch. Mr. hawley settle on a homestead about four years ago, and by hard work the family were making for themselves a comfortable home, when this calamity fell upon them. Mr. Hawley is left with three children to continue the struggles of life alone. He has the heartfelt sympathy of all who knew the family. The deceased died at the residence of J.A. Case, in this city, where she received every care and attention that humanity dictated. Everything was done to save her, but the injuries were of such a nature as to render all means unavailing.
