This is the 1855 agricultural census of Allegany County, NY, and it shows Daniel Hawley and his family living in the town of Caneadea next to his father-in-law, William Huff (not shown).  Daniel also lives next to a man named, William Hawley, who is 36 years older than he is, so it could be his father.
By looking at the birth times and locations of his children, it shows that Daniel got married to Sarah around 1837.  They soon moved to Steuben County, NY, and resided there until around 1841.  They moved to McKean County, PA, and resided there until around 1848.  A William Hawley, probably his father, was already living there.  They then moved to Allegany County, NY, in 1848, and lived there until 1859, when they moved to Michigan.
Daniel's father, William, probably died around 1859, since William is not in the 1860 census.  William may have moved to Michigan with Daniel, but he was in his 80's, and travel may have been too difficult.
Daniel seems to be moving his family around the location of the local river.  Other records show that lumbering was going on in this area at the time, so Daniel may have been a laborer in the lumber business.  This may also be the reason why Daniel moved his family to Michigan, so he may have been following the lumber trade to Michigan.

This William Holly lives next Daniel Hawley, and is 86 years old.  It states that he was born in New Jersey, and has lived in the area for fifty years.  Daniel states that he is 48 years old, and has lived in the area for 48 years, which supports the hypothesis that this is Daniel's father.  It also states that he does not own the land.  His wife is fifty years old, and is probably a second wife.

Hi Rebecca, I’m excited to hear from you. I actually put my family research on hold a few years back due my research and writing in other are as (not to mention that I have six kids!). Here’s my up-to-date website:www.MichaelLHawley.com . I’m not sure how much of my old website you reviewed, but I believe I cracked the issue of who Daniel Hawley’s father was, and actually why he used the spelling “Hawley” as opposed to “Holly”.
My Great Uncle Tat Robinson lived with Gramma (Sara) Matthews, who was Daniel Hawley’s wife. Her maiden name was Huff.
Zephaniah Huff moved to Steuben County and Allegany County from Orange County, NY just after 1800 (if my recollection is correct).
His son William owned land in both Allegany County and Steuben County.
In Steuben County, the Huffs were neighbors with Timothy Holly and family, also from Orange County, NY.
Tat told my mother and me that Gramma Matthews used to brag that there was a judge in the family. We found no judges in Michigan, but I found in the 1840 census Daniel and Sarah living in Steuben County and neighbors with the famous Judge William Hawley. I found the judge’s ancestry, and Daniel was not related.
It was at this time we see the name Hawley used. After multiple Hawley dead ends, I realized that Daniel Hawley was followed by an Increase Holly from Northern Allegany County to McKean County (Ceres Township),then back to Allegany County. Just as some of Daniel’s kids were claimed to have been born in Pennsylvania then Allegany County, NY, so were Increase’skids.
When Daniel Hawley moved to Caniadea (sp) in Allegany County,a genealogist found on an 1850 Beers map of the area that his name was Daniel“Hully” and lived on a huge section of land owned by his father-in-law, WilliamHuff.
Just off of Daniel’s small patch of land was an older William Hawley (wife Mercy, a version of the name Mary, who was much younger).
Just as you know, on Daniel’s death certificate it stated his father was William and mother was Elsa (Elizabeth).
In the 1830 McKean County census, I found a William Hawley who was widowed.
I became convinced that we were Hollys and that the spelling“Hawley” was a family lie claiming to be related to the well-known Judge William Hawley.
I did find a William Holley in Allegany County in 1820 with kids that match the age of Daniel.
I then got a Y-chromosome DNA test which confirmed my suspicions. I am not related to the New York Hawleys but am a match with Hollys.
Increase Holly was a relative of Daniel’s.
I then traced Increase (with his father Nathan) Holly from Northern Allegany County to Wantage, New Jersey, and Orange County, New York.
The Orange County Hollys (William, Daniel, Increase, Timothy,Noah, Jeremiah, etc.) were in the same Revolutionary War battalion as Zephaniah Huff, grandfather to Sarah.
The first Orange County Holly was a John Holly, grandson of he John Holly (through a Samuel) who came over on the Mayflower with Governor Winthrop’s fleet in 1630.
My DNA actually matches the descendants of this John Holly. I had to rush this for the moment, so I apologize if it sounds confusing.
